Bulgur Palas: A Hidden Historical and Cultural Treasure in Fatih, Istanbul
Perched on Istanbul’s seventh hill in the historic district of Fatih, Bulgur Palas offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the city’s historic peninsula. Once closed to the public, this iconic building has become a vibrant cultural and heritage site thanks to a major restoration effort by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
A Rich History Dating Back to 1912
Built in 1912 by Habib Bey, a parliamentarian from Bolu nicknamed the “bulgur king,” the mansion is named after the fortune he made selling wheat and barley to the state. However, following financial scandals known as the “bulgur affair,” construction remained unfinished. After Habib Bey’s death in 1926, the building was transferred to the Ottoman Bank, serving for a time as an archive and staff residence.
After changing hands multiple times and being abandoned for years, the mansion was finally acquired in 2021 by municipal subsidiaries, marking the start of its spectacular revival.
An Architectural Fusion of East and West
Attributed to Giulio Mongeri, a prominent Italian architect active in Istanbul, Bulgur Palas is a remarkable example of the First National Architectural Movement in the Ottoman Empire. The structure blends Eastern and Western influences, with pointed arches, muqarnas-style columns, floral-patterned tiles, and star motifs inspired by Seljuk art. FESTIVALS
July 4 – Burgazada Rock at Cennet Bahçesi Princes Islands
As part of the Burgazada Rock series, the fourth edition will take place on 4 July at Cennet Bahçesi on Burgazada Island (Princes’ Islands). Set in a unique open-air island atmosphere, Istanbul’s alternative music scene gathers for a full day dedicated to rock. The evening programme is as follows: site opening at 18:30, followed by performances from Nafile (18:50), Sözüm Meclisten Dışarı (20:00), Boomerang (21:10), and Silent Men (22:20). After the concerts, boat transfers will be available to various islands and Bostancı, allowing festival-goers to enjoy the event until the very end of the night.
July 10-12 – Manifestival at Festival Park Yenikapı
One of last summer’s most talked-about festivals, Manifestival, returns to Istanbul in an even bigger format, with a new venue, an expanded stage, and a fully redesigned experience. Through a figurative approach, Gosset captures the subtle energy of the spaces we pass through: pedestrians, vanishing lines, street markings, and ordinary scenes become elements of a sensitive visual narrative. Water also plays a central role in her work, evoking movement, connections between places, and the idea of transition.
