Now in Istanbul
April is usually a quiet month before the effervescence of May and June that are the months when the great festivals of Istanbul begin. The recents events contribute to the fact that April 2016 has attracted relatively less international artists than the previous years. However, you will find a lot of events not to be missed like Istanbul’s Film Festival, the ATP Tennis Open of Istanbul, the derby Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe, the opening of Beşiktaş’s stadium (the Vodafone Arena) and many concerts and other nice events. You will find below the cultural program of April 2016 in Istanbul:
April 2 – Kaan Tangöze : the leader of the group Duman, a pillar group of the Turkish rock music, and very committed against the AKP government is in solo on the stage of Garajstanbul.
April 2 & 3 – Lord of the ring concerts : the original band of the Peter Jackson’s movie will play the music from the first film of the trilogy along with its projection. Not to be missed for fans of the ring! At the Zorlu Center PSM.
April 5 – MFÖ : the group of the veterans of Turkish pop / rock music will be on the scene of the Zorlu Center PSM.
April 8 – Shantel : the German DJ, known for his contributions with various Balkans bands and orchestras and for the soundtrack of the film by Fatih Akın, “The Edge of Heaven”, is in concert at Babylon Bomonti.
April 14 – Enrico Macias : the French singer, musician and composer with a 53-year career will be in representation at the Zorlu Center PSM.
April 15 – Stravoz : the Belgian DJ duo, known for their eclectic rhythms including jazz, swing, and many other musical styles will be on stage at the Babylon Bomonti.
April 15 – Rodriguez Jr : the DJ and producer of electronic music will be at Indigo, one of the best spots for listening to some electronic music in Istanbul.
April 15 – Florian Kruse: the DJ and producer of electronic music from Berlin will be at Babylon Bomonti for a set going from classical techno to deep house.
April 17 – Istanbul – Berlin Xjazz ensemble : the best jazz musicians of Istanbul and Berlin will meet the time of an evening for a performance not to be missed at the Zorlu Center PSM.
April 20 – Asian Dub Fondation : the British alternative electronica band combining dub, hip-hop, dancehall, drum ‘n’ bass, ragga, jungle, bhangra and pop rock will take the center stage of the Babylon Bomonti.
April 23 – Ibrahim Maalouf : the French trumpeter and pianist of Lebanese origin, who collaborated on the soundtrack of several films of Kim Chapiron, the biopic of YSL and having made nearly all of the album “funambule” of Grand Corps Malade, is at the Volkswagen Arena.
23 avril – Vika Yermolyeva : the virtuoso Ukrainian pianist is at the Zorlu Center PSM. She is also known to remix metal and rock music on her Youtube channel which totaled more than 80 million views internationally.
April 23 – Tube & Berger : the German DJ duo known in 2004 for reaching up the top of the disco sales in the US with their “Straight Ahead” tube will be behind the turntables of the Babylon Bomonti.
April 27 – Hüsnü Şeylendirici : the Turkish clarinetist, best known for its airborne sound and for whom the clarinet is a family business (his whole family plays it), is at Babylon Bomonti. This is a concert to be seen if you want to discover a good local musician.
April 30 – Teenage Mutant : the Dutch DJ with catchy hits like “Barbes” is at The Hall for a mix not to be missed!
From April 2 to April 17 – Istanbul’s film festival : for its 35th consecutive year, the Istanbul film festival presents over 221 films (187 feature films) by filmmakers from over 62 different countries. The films will be mainly screened in theaters of the area of Beyoğlu and Kadıköy. For more information on the programming and the running of the festival: film.iksv.org
From April 8 to April 17 – Spring of artists : The spring of artists is an exhibition and sale of art with charity purposes, bringing together a dozen of international and local artists. This anticipated event in the Francophone community of Istanbul will be held at the French highschool Sainte Pulchérie of Beyoğlu. To know more on the program :istanbulaccueil.org
April 3 – Restauration Festival : throughout the month of April are organized gastronomic events in more than 150 restaurants in Istanbul, for more information: restoranhaftasi.com. Sunday, April 3 afternoon, the Rahmi Koç Müzesi hosts Michelin chefs from England, Italy and Thailand that will make you taste their local specialties. On Friday, April 22, there will be a street party around the Sultanahmet Sarı Köşk based on the theme of street food.
Goal! – until June 5 at the Zorlu Center PSM : Goal! is an exhibition retracing the history of football and explaining its various developments from its creation until today. Are also exposed the jerseys and other accessories of the legendary players who have marked the sport like Pele, Zidane, Maradona, Cruyff, but also Messi, Ronaldo and Robben. You will also have the opportunity to play interactive games against other visitors to the exhibition. At the Zorlu Center PSM.
Till it’s gone – until the 5th of June 2016 at the Istanbul Modern :
Till It’s Gone is a collective exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art of Istanbul from December 23rd to June 5th. Titled “An exhibition on nature and sustainable development”, the exhibition begins with a special program from December 23rd to January 12th during which the installation of Yoko Ono “Ex -There” will be displayed. At the same time, the video “Art Speaks Out” produced by ikonoTV, the world’s biggest television channel dedicated to art, will present a series on the theme of the environment. After January 13th the complete exhibition will open under the curatorship of Celenk Bafra and Paolo Colombo. More info on: www.istanbulmodern.org
Digital Revolution – until June 12 at the Zorlu Center PSM :
The exhibition explains the intersections between art and modern technology. First displayed at the Barbican Center in London, where it was described as the largest exhibition of digital art in the UK, it is now hosted by the Zorlu Center PSM. Organized with some interactive experiences such as augmented reality, 3D laser light fields, robotic giant snakes, and other activities carrying you in another dimension, you will also have the opportunity to discover the secrets of the special effects behind movies such as Christopher Nolan’s Inception, Gravity and many more…
BASKETBALLThe month of April will be rich in color for Turkish basketball lovers, Fenerbahce is qualified for the playoffs of the Euroleague, the most prestigious competition of European basketball, and Galatasaray can qualify for the final of the Eurocup to be held on April 22 and April 27 2016. We will know more in the upcoming days, stay tuned!
FOOTBALLThe end of the season promises to be exciting as two Istanbul’s teams are neck and neck for the title of champion of Turkey, Fenerbahce and Besiktas. On April 13th will be played the Galatasaray- Fenerbahce derby in an atmosphere of fire, because even if the lions of Galatasaray are already guaranteed not to finish first nor second in the championship, winning against their enemy Fenerbahce and jeopardize their title in favour of Beşiktaş is a matter of honor! On April 11 and April 30 will also be played the first matches of Beşiktaş in their new stadium, the Vodafone Arena, its supporters reputed to be the best of Turkey are waiting for this moment for more than 2 years. The atmosphere in the district of Beşiktaş is likely to be incredible!
TENNISThis is the second ATP Master tournament in Istanbul, the tournament is highly anticipated, it will be played between April 25 and May 1st. We recommend that you book your tickets in advance if you want to attend. You can buy tickets on biletix.com.
