What to do what to see in September in Istanbul?
The temperatures are still high and it is still summer here in Istanbul! This month you will find many concerts, festivals, and other outdoor events, the program is very rich and could satisfy everyone! Here’s a summary of things to do in September 2108 in Istanbul:
September 6 – Alice Merton: the young German and Canadian singer and songwriter known for her single “No Roots” is on the stage of theZorlu Center PSM.
September 7 – Yıldız Tilbe: the Turkish pop singer is one of Turkey’s best-selling singer, best known for her 90s songs of oriental inspiration, the star will be at the Jolly Joker Vadistanbul.
September 7 – Avluda Caz: Öder Focan & Şallıel Bro’s “Funkbook”: the Turkish jazz musicians currently in vogue will be at Babylon Bomonti to present Funkbook, their latest album.
September 7 – Maceo Plex: the Cuban electronic music DJ star will mix at Hypnos Istanbul! Don’t miss it!
September 8 – Marc-Andre Hamelin: the pianist and composer of Canadian classical music, world renowned for his phenomenal virtuosity and his immense repertoire ranging from classics (Haydn, Mozart) and romantic (Liszt, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms) to the impressionists (Debussy, Albéniz), will be in concert at the Aya İrini Müzesi, the magnificent church of the enclosure of the Topkapi Palace.
September 8 – Bir Karadeniz Şöleni: the Küçükçiftlik Park welcomes a festival of music of the Black Sea, a lot of musicians, folk and modern, will come to play the sounds of “Karadeniz”, or Black Sea in Turkish.
September 8 – Rhye:the independent music duo based in Los Angeles and often compared to Sade, Air or The XX, is in concert at the Salon IKSV.
September 9 – Destruction: the metal band, generally considered as the first German thrash band having had a great influence on thrash is at the IF Performance Hall of Beşiktaş.
September 11 – Candan Erçetin: the singer of Turkish variety with 23 years of career and also teaching music at the Galatasaray French high school will be on the stage of outdoor theater Cemil Topuzlu.
September 11 – Bach & Balkans concerts: the Sakip Sabancı Museum presents a series of classical music concerts, you will witness a transition from Bach’s music to Balkan music played by the trio of Andres Mustonen and the conductor and violinist of Hortus Musicus, the oldest baroque orchestra of contemporary Europe!
September 12 – Eda Baba & Güney Marlen: the rising star of the Turkish alternative scene, Eda Baba, having made herself known on YouTube, will be accompanied by guitarist Güney Marlen at the IF Performance Hall of Beşiktaş
September 12 – Hey Douglas: considered as one of the best underground DJs in Turkey, he continues his tour of electro oriental concerts. He will mix at the Moda Kayıkhane.
September 14 – Can Bonomo: singer and rocker of Sephardic origin and former representative of Turkey on Eurovision will be at the IF Performance Hall of Beşiktaş.
September 14 – Jax Jones: the English DJ of Turkish origin is known for his 2016 single “You Don’t Know Me” with Raye, who culminated at number three in the British charts, “Instruction” with Demi Lovato & Stefflon Don and Duke Dumont’s 2014 single “I Got U”, number one in UK singles sales. He will be at the Zorlu Center PSM.
September 15 – Goran Bregovic: the very famous Goran Bregovic, accustomed to the Istanbul scene and composer of music from Kusturica’s films, will be at the open-air theater Cemil Topuzlu.
September 15 & 16 – Chill-Out Festival: it is one of Istanbul’s most anticipated festivals, it is organized every year by Radio Lounge and attracts tens of thousands of people. This year again you will find a selection of artists of all musical genres and all nationalities like Viken Arman, Stavroz and many others at the Garden Fiesta. September 16 – Buika: the Spanish singer of African origin mixing flamenco with soul and funk will be on the stage of the outdoor theater Cemil Topuzlu.
September 16 – Jazz Sunday: the IF Performance Hall the very nice Beşiktaş district hosts once a month the Jazz Sunday, a selection of local and sometimes international jazz artists.
September 17 – Despina Vandi: the Greek pop diva very famous in her country but also in Cyprus, Turkey and the Balkans is in concert at the open-air theater Cemil Topuzlu.
September 18 – MFÖ: from its original name Mazhar-Fuat-Özkan, the group of Turkish rock deans to millions of albums sold, will be in concert at the Zorlu Center PSM.This event is ideal for discovering one of the most popular musical styles of the country.
September 19 – Mercan Dede & Hayko Cepkin: Mercan Dede is a musician mixing Ottoman music with psychedelic or aerial sounds, he will be accompanied on stage by Hayko Çepkin, the Turkish alternative metal singer with Armenian origins and surprising look. At the IF performance Hall.
September 20 – Kalben: the new Turkish alternative rock diva is in concert at the Zorlu Center PSM.
September 20 – Gustav Lundgren Trio: the Swedish guitarist Will be at the Nardis Jazz Club accompanied by his musicians to play jazz music inspired by Spanish music.
September 21 – Cecilia Krull: the singer of the soundtrack of the Spanish series “La Casa De Papel” will be at the Salon IKSV.
September 22 – Sigiswald Kuijken & Marie Kuijken: the duo of Belgian virtuosos of classical music will be at the beautiful concert hall The Seed of the Sakip Sabancı Museum.
September 22 – Oscar And The Wolf: the Belgian DJ known worldwide thanks to his single “You’re Mine” will mix on the stage of the Uniq open air.
September 26 – Sertab’ın Müzikali: Turkish pop singer Sertab Erener won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2003 with a 5-octave range, and will be performing at the open-air theater Cemil Topuzlu to play the key songs of her career.
September 27 – Adamlar: the Turkish rock band being one of the best local bands is in concert at the IF performance Hall of Beşiktaş.
September 28 – Evrencan Gündüz ve Uzaylılar: the new prince of Turkish indie-rock is at the IF Performance Hall of Beşiktaş accompanied by the Uzaylılar (aliens in Turkish), a group of popular musicians.
September 28 – Mashrou Leila: the Lebanese rock band is a great musical discovery for all fans of the genre, they will be at the Salon IKSV.
September 28 – Kardeş Türküler: the Kardeş Türküler are a contemporary Turkish folk-ethnic music band, they will celebrate their 25-year career at the open air Uniq!
September 28 – L’imperatrice: the pop band of French disco with catchy rhythms is at the Zorlu Center PSM; do not miss it!
September 29 – Karsu: sometimes called the Turkish “Norah Jones”, the native of Holland, Karsu, recognized in her two countries, will perform at the Aya İrini Müzesi, the magnificent church of the Topkapi Palace. Her voice is worth the detour!
September 8 – Istanbul Rooftop Festival:
As every year in September is organized the festival of the rooftops of Istanbul. From September 14 to February 23 – A window on the West:
Celebrating the history of Galatasaray High School, the exhibition “A Window on the West: 150 Years of Galatasaray High School 1868-2018” is organized by İzzeddin Çalışlar and exhibits photographs, films, ephemera and objects presenting the remarkable Francophone institution of Istanbul and starting point of the Galatasaray Club. His sister institute, the Pera Museum, presents the exhibition School Square Galatasaray from September 14th to November 25th.
From September 22 to November 4 – 4th Istanbul Biennial of Design:
The 4th Istanbul Design Biennale announces its opening program, “A school of schools: orientation”, which will take place from 20 to 21 September 2018. Organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), sponsored by Vitra, organized by Jan Boelen and featuring a visual identity designed by Offshore Studio, the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial (22 September – 4 November 2018) ) announces: Orientation, a multifaceted openness program exploring the possible futures of design education. Held over two days, from September 20 to 21, 2018, orientation days will bring together practitioners, educators and thinkers from Turkey and around the world for a biennial event conceived as a public space for dialogue, provocation and production. Together, they will test and review various educational strategies to reflect on the role of design, knowledge and global connectivity in Istanbul and beyond.
